Introduction
Transporting goods safely and sustainably from point A to point B is only possible with innovative infrastructure, while minimizing carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of a product. From a U.S. Navy ship navigating the Atlantic Ocean to a train with tram rail traveling the railways, ArcelorMittal supports the need for a greater investment in our nation’s infrastructure by providing safe sustainable steel and competitive options for a range of industries within the transport sector, including rail, transit, highways, bridges and seaways.
Rail cars
ArcelorMittal USA provides high quality steel for rail cars which are an important mode of transport for many types of goods, from tank cars that move oil and gas products to hopper cars that carry bulk commodities like coal. ArcelorMittal actively participates in R&D to ensure that the steel used in tank cars meets safety requirements such as increased puncture resistance. Our Duracorr® 300 material can outperform carbon steels in these types of applications and reduce the overall cost of ownership. Other recommended products include TC128 B and new TC128 EPR.
Innovative steel solution: Improved toughness tank car steel
| Challenge | - As more crude oil is being transported by tank cars, the industry is looking for ways to reduce the likelihood of a tank car being punctured in an accident or derailment.
|
| Solution | - An improved steel has been developed that prevents or delays the puncture of a tank car in the event of an accident or derailment. A simulation model was developed to validate steel's performance and avoid costly destructive testing.
|
| Value | - Low carbon steel with excellent properties that improves productivity for the customer
