Introduction
ArcelorMittal USA provides steel to support various kinds of industrial packaging. Steel is an effective, sustainable solution to ensure safe transportation for all kinds of materials. Steel can be used in many kinds of packaging such as drums, strapping, shipping containers, intermediate bulk containers and tanks.
Drums
Drum bodies require a balance of ductility and strength to survive drop testing without splitting. Drum ends require steels that are ductile enough to accept threaded inserts and form lock seams. Ni-flash surface treatment is recommended.
Innovative steel solution: Drum drop model
| Challenge | Drum manufacturers must test their product with a drum drop test. Contributing factors to failure were often speculated. |
| Solution | A computer simulation of the drop test was created to develop a better understanding of the factors that could alter testing results including test equipment, drop angle, fill level, material properties and drum seam design. |
| Value | - Optimize the steel grade used for this application
- Ensures robust drum design
- Limits number of destructive tests

Intermodal container
Shipping containers require weathering grade steel to mitigate corrosion during overseas transport. A high strength weathering grade has been developed to allow light weighting the container for increase payload capacity while still maintaining structural performance. Recommended products include HR 450W and CR 700W.
Innovative steel solution: 700 MPa (100 ksi) yield strength grade with weathering performance
| Challenge | Container manufacturers are looking to reduce the weight of shipping containers to allow for more cargo weight. |
| Solution | A new 100 MPa (100 ksi) cold rolled grade with weathering performance was developed by ArcelorMittal USA. |
| Value | - Gauge reduction possible due to high strength
- Increased cargo weight
- Excellent corrosion performance
- Improved dent performance

Tanks and cylinders
Tanks and cylinders must be robust to the internal pressures of the gas being contained. DP600 is recommended.
Innovative steel solution: Lightweight cylinder study
| Challenge |
LPG gas tanks used for barbecue grills are changed by the homeowner and heavy weight can be a problem. |
| Solution |
ArcelorMittal has developed a solution using dual phase steel that can lead to lighter tanks that are easier to replace. The material solution has already been proven successful by two manufacturers. |
| Value |
- Weight savings as high as 40 percent
- Cost savings potential of 30 percent
- Lower energy cost to produce as compared to composite solutions
- Lower CO2 emissions
- Completely recyclable
