Introduction
ArcelorMittal’s high-performance steel grades allow the most challenging designs and the creation of durable mining, construction, material handling and agricultural equipment. ArcelorMittal stands ready to provide the high-quality steels required in this equipment. Technology leadership and R&D support allows us to address specific needs for a variety of applications and provide customized solutions.
Earth-moving and mining equipment
Plates are most often used to build these machines with varying levels of thickness and strength needed to meet performance needs. Fabrication is made easier with special grades design for improved laser cutting, welding and post heat treatability for case hardening. A full suite of abrasion grades is available to tailor the life expectancy or reduce thickness requirements for lightweighting. Recommended products include Hardwear®, BethStar and HiStar, and LASEReady®.
Innovative steel solution: High strength steel for roll over protection structures
| Challenge | The operator cabin of the machine must meet ISO 3471_1 performance standards for roll over protection. These Roll Over Protection Structures (ROPS) are normally fabricated from conventional 350 MPa steels. |
| Solution | ArcelorMittal has developed an optimized ROPS solution utilizing steel grades available in our high strength portfolio. |
| Value | - Increased safety for the operator
- Weight reduction of the cabin by 24 percent
- Meets ISO requirement
- Makes use of modern manufacturing processes

Agricultural equipment
Ultra-high strength steels are available to enable lightweighting of harvesting equipment for increased fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. This steel can also offer enhanced abrasion performance, which is necessary for parts seeing increased wear. Recommended products include: Amstrong® Ultra S700MCL and MartINsite®.
Innovative steel solution: Agristeel study
| Challenge | Increases in equipment size and emission controls are adding weight to the footprint of the machines used in the field. Larger tires are needed to prevent sinking and some roads and bridges cannot handle the increased weights. |
| Solution | UHSS is developed, but not adapted to this market. ArcelorMittal has extended its solutions portfolio to certain equipment like combines and dump trailers. |
| Value | Use of UHSS solutions in place of traditional steels for this example resulted in: - 20 percent weight reduction
- 8 percent cost reduction
- 80m of reduced welds
- Improved design functionality

Lifting equipment
Lifting equipment requires stiffness and lightweight in the boom to allow increased payload capacity. Toughness and fatigue performance for safety and long life are also important. Ultra-high strength plate and hot rolled steels are available to allow design flexibility. Recommended products include either Amstrong® Ultra hot rolled grades or HiStar, BethStar, LQ130 and LQ140 plate products.
Innovative steel solution: Amstrong® Ultra
| Challenge | Lifting heavy loads requires stiff and strong booms. This was traditionally addressed by using welded steel with heavy box sections, which added to the weight of the cantilevered load. |
| Solution | Amstrong® Ultra steel grades balance high strength with toughness and bendability performance that go beyond standard ASTM and EN specifications. |
| Value | - Enhanced bendability allows for optimized boom section design
- High strength allows for thinner materials to be used
- Lighter booms allow for increased capacity or a reduction in base weight
- High toughness for confidence in design
