Introduction
From rooting for your favorite sports team in a world-class venue and viewing New York City from the top of the One World Trade Center to crossing a 3.1 mile bridge spanning the Hudson River, some of the world's most iconic structures are built from our highest quality of sustainable steel. As the leading global provider of steel for construction, ArcelorMittal provides a variety of flat carbon and plate steel products for the construction industry. Steel’s aesthetic along with its high strength makes it the most compelling material for both architects and engineers to construct the buildings of tomorrow.
Bridges
ArcelorMittal USA's plate mills are the nation’s leading suppliers of products to the bridge fabrication industry. We supply the thickest, longest and widest plates in the country to meet safety performance and provide solutions to reduce the total cost of ownership. ArcelorMittal USA was active in the development of new high-performance steels (HPS) that are now widely used in the most critical bridge designs across the United States. ArcelorMittal USA prides itself on supplying the highest quality of steel. For example, we provide weathering steels to improve design life and our new corrosion resistant steel, Duracorr®, is finding applications in challenging environments.
Innovative steel solution: Duracorr®
| Challenge |
The maintenance costs for blasting and painting a steel bridge to prevent corrosion during the expected life can be expensive.
|
| Solution |
Our Duracorr® steel conforming to ASTM 709 50CR has superior corrosion performance compared to both conventional high-performance steels (HPS) for bridges and HPS weathering grades. |
| Value |
- Steel thickness can be reduced because a corrosion loss allowance is not necessary
- Thinner structural members make the bridge lighter and easier to install
- Maintenance is essentially eliminated for the life of the bridge

Infrastructure projects
ArcelorMittal USA produces steels for numerous applications that are critical to our nation's infrastructure. From unmatched hot rolled and plate capabilities for guard rails, pilings and poles to our coated hot-dipped galvanized steel with heavy coating weights and stenciling for culvert applications, we can provide a sustainable, safe solution.
Innovative steel solution: TL-5 barrier project
| Challenge |
A TL- 5 center median barrier made from steel was not available in the USA. Only concrete barriers could be specified where a TL-5 rating was required. |
| Solution |
A steel TL-5 barrier solution has been designed, tested and approved by the FHWA. It has been adopted already in several states. Gregory Industries is our manufacturing partner. |
| Value |
- Improved safety for vehicle occupants by lowering deceleration rates
- Less damage to vehicles in a crash
- Lower installed cost compared to a concrete center median barrier
- Easier to repair than concrete

Building products
ArcelorMittal USA offers more varieties of flat roll steel than any other domestic producer. Whether steel is needed for structural components, interior or exterior applications, ArcelorMittal can meet your quality standards with long-lasting Galvalume®. Additionally, ArcelorMittal's global R&D continues to develop new products that will keep steel a top choice for architects and builders of today and tomorrow. Main products for this segment include plate, hot rolled, coated, cold rolled and tin.
Innovative steel solution: LustreLok™
| Challenge |
Unpainted galvanized steels used in roofing, cladding and other visible applications can discolor when exposed to the elements due to zinc corrosion. Processing oils can smudge, streak, leave fingerprints and can be slippery when remaining on roofing during installation. |
| Solution |
LustreLok™ dry coating on galvanized steels will maintain the surface appearance for a longer period as compared to traditional mill applied passivation treatments and oils. |
| Value |
- The thin transparent coating will allow the standard surface of the zinc coated substrate
- Surface properties eliminate the need for further lubrication during roll forming
- Improved productivity from extended die life and ability to form pre-paint and LustreLok™ interchangeably without cleaning dies

HVAC and plumbing equipment
ArcelorMittal USA provides steel to meet the demanding requirements for HVAC and plumbing equipment in both residential and commercial applications. From Type 1 aluminized and enameling cold rolled steels able to withstand high temperatures to make hot water heaters, to galvanized steel that defends against corrosion, to Type 3 extra formable steel offering incredible formability, ArcelorMittal can provide the solution. Main products for this segment include plate, hot-rolled, cold rolled and coated.
Innovative steel solution: Type 3 Extra Formable
| Challenge |
Manufacturers are looking to create deeper bathtubs and ovens cavities or cook tops with intricate shapes that traditional enameling steels are incapable of forming. |
| Solution |
A new ASTM Type 3 Enameling steel has been developed with extra formability for deep drawing. |
| Value |
- Enables new geometries not possible before
- Improves scrap rates at the press on difficult-to-form parts
- Excellent enamel adhesion with resistance to black specking and outgassing
