Introduction
ArcelorMittal produces specific grades of flat steel products available as hot-rolled, cold rolled and coated steels for use in a wide variety of appliances or white goods. These durable steel products are the material of choice for manufacturing a variety of household appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, and refrigerators. Steel can be endlessly recycled therefore improving the sustainability of the appliance when performing life cycle analyses. RoHS compliant chemical treatment is available to provide temporary corrosion protection on galvanized surfaces.
Major home appliances
ArcelorMittal produces steel for the appliance industry that our homes can depend on. Type 2 and 3 enameling steels in cooking appliances offer excellent formability, after-fire strength and sag resistance while preventing fish scale and carbon boil. Type 1 aluminized steel can be used in ovens and dryers for heat ducting and burner parts. Cold rolled embossed steel can be used on refrigerators, freezers or oven side panels to hide finger prints and dirt. High strength steel is available for compressor brackets, structural components and hinges, while coated products provide additional protection against corrosive detergents and bleach. Other products include LustreLok™ and Ni-flash surface treatments.
Innovative steel solution: Prefinished steel forming model
| Challenge |
External panels of appliances often require intricate shapes stamped into them to improve stiffness and structural support. Using pre-painted or prefinished steel for these panels can present aesthetic and corrosion challenges when the paint or film is stretched too thin.
 |
| Solution |
ArcelorMittal has created a computer model to predict the forming limitations of prefinished steel based on visual and performance criterion. Designs can be screened prior to prototyping to determine compatibility with pre-painted steel. |
| Value |
- Reduced prototyping costs
- Shorter development cycle
- Faster validation testing
